CASCADE CEMETERY RESTORATION COMMITTEE

The Cascade Cemetery sits on just over 4 acres of Crown Land located 2.8 km southwest of Christina Lake.  Established in 1897, the cemetery has both historic and cultural values and is one of the few remaining heritage assets dating to early Cascade City.  Its establishment coincides with the settlement of the community and its eventual decline (the last known burial was in 1955).  Prospector Samuel Swanson was the first burial in Cascade Cemetery in April 1897 followed by at least twenty-seven burials that have been confirmed through ground-penetrating radar, however; research of death registrations and obituaries dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s in the Cascade Record and Grand Forks Miner indicate the cemetery may contain up to twenty-four more burial sites.

In 2026, work to remark the cemetery boundary, remove damaged fences, assess and mitigate dangerous trees, and reconfigure the parking lot began.  Work will continue through 2026, including the installation of a new kiosk, pathways and a planted fence.

To find the Cascade cemetery:

The graveyard is on the hillside off Stewart Creek Road.  Heading towards Grand Forks from Christina Lake, turn right (north) up Stewart Creek Road.  Drive past the powerlines and turn right on the second laneway.  This leads to the cemetery parking lot.
