Arts and Culture

Christina Lake has a rich history in the Arts and Culture, beginning with our original inhabitants the Sinixt, Sanpoil, Okanagan and other first nation indigenous peoples who left their pictographs along the lakeshore many years ago for those in modern day to view and enjoy.

In the summer of 2006, local Boundary artists and Artisans from Christina Lake and Kettle River area formed a society to represent and facilitate the growth and development of the region’s artistic community. The not for profit organization became the Christina Lake Arts and Artisans Society (CLAAS) and enjoys great support from the Regional District. The Welcome Centre opened as the culmination of a long-standing dream of residents, along with the local Chamber of Commerce, built as the area’s first ‘Green’ high performance building, it has become the artistic and educational heart of an entire community.

It is a gathering place, where people can celebrate creativity through personal and shared experiences of the arts such as the Christina Lake Story Pole and the amazing 3-D floor mural. Inside the Welcome Centre, the Arts on 3 Gallery shows exhibits presenting a broad view of cultures, places, and people. Here you will find a diverse collection of talented artists, bronze casting sculptures, stained glass artisans, painters, bead makers, jewelers, fiber artists and potters, as well as photographers and carvers of wood and stone, many drawing their inspiration from the Lake and surrounding mountains. Besides CLAAS, the Welcome Centre houses the Christina Lake Stewardship Society with it’s own nature gallery and information material, BC Tourism, Gateway and a quaint coffee shop. Once a week the Grand Forks public library is represented here and offers a broad spectrum of book titles as well as access to events and the virtual book club.

The Welcome Centre is the home to many live performances and events with a diverse mix of local, Canadian and international artists and genres – dance, folk, rock, jazz, classical and works that blur the Boundary Country. The Christina Lake Arts and Artisans Society also offers educational classes to the community and visitors alike.

Local markets in Christina Lake happen throughout the summer, offering a glimpse into the Boundary’s handmade and homegrown offerings.

At Christina Lake Arts and Artisans Society, we exist to celebrate and energize our community through the arts. Come and see what we are all about, your inner artist will be smiling.
