AUXILIARY TO THE CHRISTINA LAKE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The Auxiliary to The Christina Lake Community Association consists of over twenty-six members, who volunteer to help in preparation of food for various functions relating to fund raising for the Christina Lake Community Hall, including spaghetti pasta dinners, Homecoming Community Dinner and many others. Many hours are spent by the Auxiliary volunteers, helping for funerals and dinners in the Hall. Their role in the function of the Community Hall is integral. The Auxiliary is a wonderful group of ladies who welcome new members and volunteers to help assist in this valued community service.

1ST CHRISTINA LAKE GIRL GUIDES

1st Christina Lake Girl Guides meet weekly from September-June at The Community Hall. The Girl Guides are run through the generous support of parent volunteers and leaders.

Over the last year the Guides have worked on earning Program and Interest Badges. They hand-tied fleece quilts to donate internationally, earning the International Service Badge. They had a day camp at the community hall that included exercising, sewing book covers, contributing to the Lake Clean Up, games, pizza dinner and an indoor campfire. They spent a weekend at camp learning camp skills including cooking on camp stoves, setting up and taking down tents, and knot tying that earned them the Basic Camper Badge. The girls have sold Girl Guide cookies to fund the unit in the spring and fall.

CHRISTINA LAKE ARTS AND ARTISANS SOCIETY (CLAAS)

Christina Lake Arts & Artisans Society (aka CLAAS) is a charitable organization whose mandate is to Celebrate and Energize our community through the Arts. We do this in a number of ways; first, we spearheaded the design, construction, and fundraising for the new Welcome Centre (formerly known as the Christina Living Arts Centre) here at Christina Lake. Since its opening in 2011, it has become a focal point of the community, and home to our Arts on 3 Gallery. It also is the location for our numerous free workshops and classes in the arts and the base for our Summer Concert Series, which draws 100’s of locals and visitors out to see and hear top notch performances, both inside and out back in the Park. The Arts on 3 Gallery is located in the Welcome Centre and is a great source of artwork,  gifts and inspiration. The Gallery hosts over 30 local and regional artists, plus a selection of international Glassblowers. The artists include painters, photographers, potters, wood turners and carvers, metal work, handmade jewelry and much more. There is also a great selection of artistic cards, chocolates, and glass ornaments to make gift shopping so easy! Come in and see our featured Artist, or join one of the many creative workshops and classes that run throughout the year.

CHRISTINA LAKE WELCOME CENTRE

Located in the heart of Christina Lake in the community park, the Christina Lake Welcome Centre celebrated its official Grand Opening on August 6, 2010. The focus of ten years work to create a Welcome Centre for the region, it serves as an interpretive centre and as a tourist attraction that showcases the region’s vibrant arts and cultural life, as well as its commitment to environmental sustainability. A gallery displays arts and crafts created by artists and artisans from throughout the entire Boundary region. A retail shop, including on-line sales capability, offers locally produced items, as well as a variety of other tourist-related products for sale to visitors.

An Eco Machine treats all of the wastewater from the Centre. The Eco Machine will be an incredible teaching tool about our ecosystems, showing how nature works to break down waste through microbes, fish, snails and aquatic plants, and produces clean water without the use of chemicals or other compounds harmful to our environment.

The next phase of this project will include a Studio Centre for artisans and an outside amphitheatre for summer music and performances.

WILDLIFE IN CHRISTINA LAKE

Christina Lake and the Boundary area are abundant with wildlife. The Grasslands in the Gilpin area have a large herds of Mountain Sheep, mule and whitetail deer. A walk along the gorge section of the Trans Canada Trail is sure to have the local marmots investigating your presence. As we are a rural community it is very common to see whitetail deer in the middle of developed areas year round. Elk can be found at higher elevations along with the more elusive moose. You’ll also find everything from squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits to bears and cougars.

BIRD WATCHING AT CHRISTINA LAKE

Bird watching at Christina Lake varies considerably over the year, with spring and summer being the most rewarding. The best place is in the Nature Park at the southeast end of the lake. The many trails throughout the park allow you to quietly approach the birds both in the woods and along the shore.

Another area that is home to a variety of birds is on the trail along the east side of Christina Creek, accessible from Highway #3 where it crosses the creek. During the spring and summer, you can expect to see as many as 73 species with another 24 during the spring and fall migrations. There are also 29 additional species of casual non-breeding birds, which may be sighted at any time.

Familiar sights along the shorelines include ducks, herons, and loons. Several species of eagles, hawks and falcons reside here. Wild turkeys roam freely, along with grouse, quail and other ground birds. It is common to see Bald Eagles soaring above the pine trees along the banks of the Kettle River. A walk along one of our many trails will reveal several species of woodpeckers, flickers, blue jays, whiskey jacks, magpies and a host of song birds; finch, sparrows, grosbeaks, bluebirds, nuthatches and more. If you walk quietly to the shores of the Community Park you will spot mallard and wood ducks, grebes, gold eyes and butterballs. To the quieter north end of the lake you will hear the longing cry of loons.

GLADSTONE (TEXAS CREEK) PROVINCIAL PARK

Texas point; also known as Gladstone Provincial Park and Campground. They have a nice public access beach area right on the lake. The beaches are more secluded, almost like you claim your own portion of the beach for your time there. On the south side of the beach, there are dog-friendly spots, which is good for the dog lovers.

CHRISTINA LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK

*UPDATE*

The Provincial Park Beach is now wheelchair accessible thanks to our brand new mobility-mat! The mat has been rolled out and will be in place through to the end of September. The chair can be accessed during that time by visiting the Christina Lake Visitor Centre. To ensure the safety of the mobi-chair users a care aid must be in attendance and a life jacket worn. A waiver must be signed and a member of the tourism staff will accompany the user’s to the beach to assist with chair setup, a time for drop off determined.

Bring your family to the sunny Provincial Park Beach at the south end of Christina Lake where they can relax on the sand, picnic using the tables, and gaze out onto the calm blue waters. There’s plenty of sand and space along the beach to stretch out your towels, and the warm water invites swimming or just splashing around! There are washrooms and water on site, so you can stay for a while or stay all day.

This intimate provincial park features a big, beautiful beach that stretches almost a thousand feet along the shore. Picnic tables are handily located at the top of the sandy area next to a shady grove of trees. Pick your ideal location for enjoying the sun or hanging out in the shade.

The shallow water stretches out a good distance, with good wading and play areas for small children. Floats and paddleboards can be launched to explore the lake, or for taking a nice long float in the sunshine.

As seen from the south beach, Christina Lake gently folds into lush, forested slopes to the north. A slight bend in the lake means that less than half is seen, but this also creates the picturesque effect of overlapping hillsides fading into the distance. The continuing water invites exploration of the north end by boat and by hiking the Deer Point Trail.

Summer days means lots of sunshine and warm water for perfect family adventures at the Christina Lake Provincial Park Beach. Let loose your imagination on sand castles and moats,
or relax and soak up the sun; taking an occasional refreshing plunge into the clean waters to truly experience the magic of Christina Lake. This is our most accessible beach and features plenty of picnic tables, volleyball net, drinking fountain and flush toilets. Turn west off Highway #3 onto West Lake Drive then turn right at Park Road.

TROY CREEK

A large popular site on the western shore. It is boat access only and has a beach, swimming, camping, and fishing.

TREADMILL CREEK

A large popular site on the western shore. It is boat access only and has a beach, swimming, camping, and fishing.

TRAPPER CREEK

This site can be accessed either by boat or from the Deer Point Trail. It is a small, semi-open site, nice for swimming, fishing, and hiking. Watch for poison ivy.

STARCHUCK BEACH

This boat access only recreational site has a large, popular beach area with camping, swimming, and fishing.

PARSON CREEK

Located on the western shore of the lake, this is a small, treed site. There is a nice beach with good fishing and swimming. It is boat access only.

OLE JOHNSON

A boat access site situated on a historic miner’s resort site. Try fishing for Kokanee, Rainbow Trout, Bass, Whitefish, Burbot, and Carp.

AXEL JOHNSON

One of the many boat access recreational sites on Christina Lake. It is very popular with good swimming, camping, and fishing.

INDOOR RECREATION

The gymnasium at Christina Lake Elementary School is used for many indoor recreational activities year round including volleyball, badminton, and floor hockey. Contact the school for more information and schedules: 447-9423.

CHRISTINA LAKE COMMUNITY BALL DIAMOND

Catch a ball game at the baseball diamond located adjacent to the Community Hall at 90 Park Road. There are numerous games and tournaments throughout the summer. Pick a team and cheer them on. No game? You and your friends can practice.

Our baseball diamond was redeveloped in the Spring of 2009 with new bases, markings, scoreboards and painting. The park has covered stands, a concession, two dugouts, and lighting for night games. There is ample parking for players and spectators alike. Washrooms and a children’s play park are across the street.
